There are thirty two chapters (some chapters take up more than one post-it, proof indeed that those chapters are too long). Looking at it I can see that the book doesn't get going until about chapter nineteen. Chapters one to nineteen need serious restructuring. Chapters nineteen onwards just need serious work. Full stop.
Tomorrow I get to be creative again as I think how I'm going to shape and transform the first draft into the second.

Absolutely love the post-its! It must be really exciting to be able to actually see your novel x
That looks far more organised than my notice board... I've just pinned up random pics of what my characters' houses are like and stuff!
Must be quite intoxicating being able to pull it all apart and knit it back together again!
Helen - it is quite exciting - I love taking stock of the situation and seeing where I stand.
Jen - that's a good idea - pinning up pictures of their lives. I might do that too.
That's excellent - really organised. When I've finished the first draft I need to write down a brief description at each of my chapters and check that they flow and that there's a good balance between the main plot and the sub plots.
Funnily enough my novel has thirty-two chapters too and they vary in length from the 750 word first chapter to other chapters that are nearly 3,000 words long! From what I've read you really shouldn't worry too much about having chapters that are an identical length.
Finished the first edit I mean. I finished the first draft a while ago ;o)
What a lot of drawing pins. It's like a little work of art. It makes my tatty sheets, blue tacked to the wall look very shabby:-)
Wow that's impressive. I hope you aren't spending more time pinning up post-its neatly, than you are writing... ;-)

Seriously impressive!!!
I think that's a great way to do it. I just have a story plan on A4 sheets with different POV's in different colours but yours is very visual. I like that.
Meant to ask: do you have a summary of each chapter on the post its or a the first lines of the opening chapter?
Fiona - I have a summary of each chapter.
Wow! I bow at your feet. Fabulous idea!

I am SO nicking that idea, Helen, it's fantastic.
It looks great spread out like that - I must buy some pin-up cards or post-its this weekend. (And then find a space in my cluttered house to actually pin them up.)
It must be so much fun to see your book on a wall summarised like that!
Have you seen Will Self's study?
